Wonder Condos at 462 Eastern Ave - Now Selling

Wonder Condos at 462 Eastern Avenue is new development currently in the pre-construction stage. This new development is a mixed use building being used for both residential and commercial uses.

In late 2017, a joint proposal was submitted to the City of Toronto by Graywood Developments and the Alterra Group of Companies. The proposal detailed a plan to repurpose the iconic Weston Bakery building on Eastern Avenue into a new, high-density residential and retail complex. Originally known as “462 Eastern” in reference to the former Weston Bakery’s address, the project has now been dubbed Wonder Condos.

Eastern Avenue’s Weston Bakery closed its doors in 2014, and since then, its former site has been languishing in an unused state. Recent news reports detail how things inside the building are very similar to how they were when employees left the site after the bakery’s last day of operation. Name Tags are still on the lockers. Tools and schedules still sit in the millwright’s shop. The bread-baking machinery has yet to be removed.

That looks to be changing for the better, and very soon. While the Wonder Condos project is still in its very early stages of development, real estate insiders who have been following the story believe that the planned community will breathe new life into this underutilized corner of east Toronto’s Studio District.

A Bold Reimagining of an Iconic Toronto Building

The 2017 proposal presented by Graywood Developments and the Alterra Group of Companies envisions the Wonder Condos at 462 Eastern site as a mixed-use community that integrates newly repurposed residential and commercial space into the reclaimed façade of an iconic Toronto building.

Portions of the existing building will be designated as heritage property, ensuring that they will be preserved in a matter befitting that description. Much of the former Weston Bakery’s existing brickwork will be retained, with newly included punched windows defining the project’s second floor to protect a greater percentage of the original masonry.

Glass-encased units will also be added to the upper portions of the building on both street-facing sides. This will increase the site’s livable space while giving the project a distinct and tasteful hint of contemporary flair.

Project Details

This new building is proposed to be 8 storeys high with retail space on the ground level, which will include a grocery store. There will be 286 residential units comprising of a mix of Hard Lofts, Soft Lofts, Condos. In addition there will be Town Homes constructed on Logan Ave. The development will feature an underground parking garage for 242 stalls, 42 of which will be for residential visitors, and 60 for retail use. There are also 333 proposed spaces for bicycle parking.

Parks and Recreation

The Riverside /  Leslieville Queen Street strip is a one block walk to the North and boasts an array of retail stores, restaurants and cafes and a short drive to the East is the Toronto Beaches neighbourhood with waterfront boardwalk. An excellent location for a stroll or bike ride.

Cherry Beach to the south is also in close proximity along with the Martin Goodman Trail and the Tommy Thompson Conservation Area and Bird Sanctuary.

Transportation

Wonder Condos at 462 Eastern is within a few minutes to the Gardiner Expressway and DVP and is just steps away from the Queen Street streetcar and bus routes 301, 501, 502, 503 and the Carlaw bus routes 72, 325.
